If you feel anything like us, you cannot wait to escape your own four walls and get out of town. The recent pandemic has made us all really thankful for what we have and even more grateful for the outdoors. Simple activities have become great escapes like taking a walk around the neighborhood or dusting off a pair of old roller skates.

Now that most restrictions have been lifted in the tri-state area, our team has been taking advantage of working from anywhere with mini staycations close to home. It is not lost on us that New York State has so much adventure to offer the whole family.

A trip worth taking this summer is heading up to the Catskill Mountains just a few hours north of New York City. With so many small towns to choose from, the mountains will be calling you back weekend after weekend. The Catskills are easily accessible from all sides of the tri-state area and beyond. It is sure to be a special trip no matter where you are coming from or how you get there.

We recommend traveling by car as you’ll want to drive down the country roads with the windows down and your favorite song on the stereo. For those of us who are city dwellers and may not have access to a car, take the Amtrak train from Penn Station and be sure to sit on the left side of the train for optimal views of the Hudson River and surrounding mountains. Any town you choose to settle into is just as good as the next, and if you are feeling adventurous, the next town is just a quick, scenic drive away.

A few of our favorites (but definitely not limited to) are Woodstock, Hudson, and Kingston. Each town has a little something unique to offer, with plenty of small shops, bookstores, and restaurants to explore. The best part of a countryside escape is the ease in social distancing. If we’re being honest, this puts it at the top of our list as a reason we run to the mountains, even without a looming pandemic.

Another reason we love our trips to the Catskills is for the quality produce from the numerous family-owned farms. Depending on the season, most have u-pick hours that allow you to become one with nature and buy your favorites by the reusable bag full. Just make sure to have a few recipes ready for all that fresh farm-to-table produce you’ll head home with. Blueberry picking is currently in full swing with peach season right around the corner this August!

We suggest spending the day at a local state park for a little R&R. Parks like Lake Tagkhanic or Dutchman’s Landing have areas to camp, grill, playgrounds, a bathroom, and concession stands for cool treats and quick snacks.

If you’re heading out for a weekend in the mountains, let us know where you end up. We love to hear from our weekend warriors. Make sure to tag us on social media @wearfirst, especially if you’re rocking our shorts too!
